Discover Ethiopian Food

If you find yourself in Anahola, HI, and are craving something unique and full of flavor, Ethiopian food might be just what you're looking for. Nestled at 4523 Ioane Rd C3-B, the vibrant, welcoming space serves up authentic dishes that not only satisfy your hunger but also introduce you to the rich traditions of Ethiopia.

One of the best things about Ethiopian cuisine is how communal it is. Dishes are typically shared, making it a perfect choice for groups or families. The food is served on large, round platters, with various stews, lentils, and meats placed on top of a base of injera-a spongy, sour flatbread. Injera acts as both the plate and the utensil, as diners tear off pieces to scoop up the delicious combinations. It's a hands-on experience, and there's something so satisfying about eating with friends or loved ones this way.

The menu at this particular diner offers a solid mix of traditional options. The Doro Wat, a rich and spicy chicken stew, is often considered the national dish of Ethiopia. The tender chicken, boiled eggs, and spicy berbere sauce create a flavor explosion that’s not easily forgotten. Pair it with a bit of injera, and you've got a meal that covers all your cravings: spicy, sour, and savory all at once.

Another standout is the Tibs, which is sautéed meat-be it lamb, beef, or chicken-prepared with vegetables and spiced to perfection. This dish is another great option for anyone who enjoys a little heat without it overwhelming the palate. The meat is cooked to a tender texture, and the blend of spices will have you coming back for more.

For vegetarians or anyone looking for something lighter, the Shiro (a chickpea stew) and Atayef (a lentil dish) are great picks. These dishes are packed with flavor and offer a comforting, satisfying experience without the need for meat. The combination of spices in the vegan options is delicate, offering a hearty yet fresh taste that perfectly complements the injera.

There’s no shortage of variety here, and whether you're a regular at Ethiopian restaurants or a first-timer, there's something on the menu to please everyone. The kitfo, minced raw beef mixed with spiced butter, is a more adventurous option for those looking to try something different, and while it might sound intimidating to some, it’s a beloved dish in Ethiopian culture and a must-try for those seeking an authentic experience.

Speaking of authenticity, the atmosphere of this diner is warm and inviting, with the friendly staff eager to share their knowledge of Ethiopian food. If you’re not sure what to order, don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations-they’ll be happy to guide you through the menu and help you find the perfect combination of dishes based on your tastes.

The diner also offers a selection of beverages that pair wonderfully with the food, including the famous T'ej, a traditional Ethiopian honey wine. It’s a little sweet, with a slight herbal finish, making it the perfect complement to the bold flavors of the dishes.

If you’re wondering how the restaurant measures up compared to others, many visitors have praised it for not just the taste but also the generous portions and the cozy, family-friendly atmosphere. Locals and tourists alike have left glowing reviews, often mentioning how the food reminds them of meals shared in Ethiopia itself. The authenticity of the flavors and the way the dishes are prepared truly set it apart from other places offering international cuisine in the area.

What’s also great about this location is the accessibility-it’s conveniently located right on Ioane Road in Anahola, making it easy to swing by after a day exploring the scenic spots of Kauai. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, this Ethiopian restaurant provides an excellent chance to experience something entirely new in an incredibly friendly setting.

The next time you're in the mood for something different, give Ethiopian food a try. You might just find a new favorite spot right here in Anahola.

  • Super friendly owner, easy to talk with and very informative about the food she loved to create. Loved interacting with her, and she cooked the beef from the moment we ordered, apologizing for it taking ten minutes; but she cheerfully showed us all the lentils and peas as well as the fermented teff flatbreads she had. It was an unexpected find on this island, and a cuisine experience that I'm very glad we had. The sourdough flatbread was moist and super flavorful as were the lentil and split pea dishes. The hot sauce was super tasty and spicy. I would probably get the vegetarian version next time, as while there was nothing wrong with the beef, it wasn't quite up to the quality of everything else. The salad was super fresh and crisp. There was also a huge covered area with lots of tables and chairs that was very comfortable to eat in.

  • Really excellent Ethiopian food! Joined 4 friends for lunch today and we loved everything. The injera was fantastic, and the beef, lentils & split peas were perfectly seasoned and delicious.

  • I walked into this unassuming shop in Anahola market and was instantly met by Abby‘s big smile and beautiful presence. I appreciate her deep connection to her roots to Ethiopia and strong emphasis on all ingredients being purely organic, authentic and sourced from local farms. The meal was divinely DELICIOUS!! so good that I had to eat with my hands~ the traditional way! I believe she offers her love and honors her country in the best way

  • Great find on the island! The owner was so friendly and very knowledgeable about the organic foods in the area. I hope that the shopping center the restaurant is in can open more if it's shops. Just a couple places are open in the whole complex.

  • Just had combo meal with beef. They source teff flour from Idaho Ethiopian farmer. Very good. Cost $25. I say ok value, especially considering I paid $40 for a cheeseburger and fries in Princeville last night. And split meal with wife which filled us up.
